Hey all, lost post... I've asked enough questions so thought I'd post about my EDT to Milan. I stayed overnight so not really a day, but still, went on my own and crammed stuff in.
Sunday 11th Feb was my birthday and a band I love were playing in Milan (Bad Omens for anyone interested). Figured I'd hit two birds with one stone and see the city and go to a gig.
So, I flew out on the 8:45 flight from Manchester with RyanAir. Was meant to arrive in Bergamo at 11:55 but there was a delay and was sat on the runway for over an hour 🤦♂️
My ticket for the terraces for the Duomo was still valid even though I missed my time slot, they didn't care.
If anyone is worried about how to get from the airport, don't be. You can't miss the coaches and you can definitely pay on the day. They're all easily signposted etc. Takes about an hour to get into Milan Central. From there it takes about 10 mins to get to the duomo on the metro (really easy to get a ticket from the machines). Get the M3 metro and get off at the stop "Duomo" 😂 - it's about 4 or 5 stops and it's €2.20 or just less that 2 quid for unlimited travel within 90mins. 100% recommend the rooftop pass the views are amazing. After that I walked around and got food then went to the gig in the evening.
The next day I wanted to go to Lake Como but there was a nationwide train strike. Managed to still get a train to Varenna. Took about 1hr and 20 mins from Milan Central and cost about £16 for a return ticket (you need to validate your ticket via the trenitalia app if you buy online before you tavel). I got there for about 11am. I cannot recommend visiting the lake enough. I spent the day wandering around Varenna and Bellagio the ferry is €4.60 one way. I got back to Milan for about 5pm, my coach back to the airport was 17:40, got to the airport an hour later and my flight was at 21:55.
I didn't feel rushed at any point and I think the time I had was perfect. Don't let going on your own put you off, just go!
