My 24hrs in Athens 🇬🇷
Flew from Gatwick to Athens Saturday night, grabbed some food and got an early night.
Next morning we started exploring saw the changing of the guard, acropolis and a whole load more historical sights.
Great thing is first Sunday of the month in winter the historical sites are free which was a big bonus. We didn't spend any money on attractions. Also the Acropolis is reduced to EUR 10 for adults until March. We had our overnight bags with us which we were told were too big to take inside so we stored them for free.
Although the entry was free you still had to collect a timed ticket so we ended up waiting about 45 mins.
We walked to Plaka which was a really lovely neighbourhood with shops cafes and restaurants.
Then we took the metro to Piraeus by the coast, walked around the Marina, harbour found some little beaches. There were so many nice cafes and restaurants by the sea, so couldn't resist a Freddo Cappuccino by the sea.
Transport - We found the public transport in Athens really efficient and cheap, we got 24hr public transport passes for 4eur 10, only thing it didn't include was the airport journey.
Weather - weather was ideal, yesterday was pretty sunny around 17c and didn't need to wear my coat all day. So made a lovely escape and felt so great to be in the sun again (note to self to book another warmer trip soon)
Overall had an amazing day and felt like we got to see quite a lot in terms of the city and the cost. I'm also obsessed with Greek coffee so definitely made the most of that. We had a delay on the way back just under 2 hrs but it wasn't the worst and they made up some time on the way back.
Cost- Was pretty budget friendly, we paid £20 return each for the flights with Wizzair discount club. Probably spent another £50 each on food transport etc. Some of the food options were so affordable, we got Gyros for 4eur each.
